It is a listed monument with a carved doorway bearing inscriptions from 1797 and an iconostasis painted in 1810.
About the place
The church is rectangular, 19.7 by 6.2 m, unusually long for the area. Inscriptions on the carved doorway, in Romanian in Cyrillic letters and in Latin, say it was renovated in 1797 by craftsmen including Bocse Mihai. In 1862 the tower was rebuilt and the porch around the church was added; it was repaired again in 1922.
The four-tier iconostasis was painted in 1810 and shows Baroque influence. The church is a listed monument (BH-II-m-A-01185) and stands on a slope in the village cemetery of Peștiș, about 2 km from central Aleșd.
Good to know
- You can see the outside at any time; for the interior ask for the priest or sexton in the village.
- Look at the south doorway with its 1797 inscriptions.
- Combine it with the trip to the Piatra Șoimului fortress, also reached from Peștiș.
