About the place

The tower was the watchtower of the fort built after 1606, when Prince Stephen Bocskai settled 300 hajduk soldiers here. It burned in 1658 and stood roofless for almost 250 years. In 1899 it was restored and received the Arany collection, begun in 1885 with the furniture, clothes and books donated by the poet's son. Since 1907 a statue of the poet by Alajos Stróbl has stood above the entrance.

The current exhibition opened on 15 March 2018, after a renovation made with the Petőfi Literary Museum in Budapest. The ground floor covers the town's history, the upper floors the poet's life, his portraits and his reconstructed study, and the top floor has games for children. The collection holds 661 original manuscripts. Official hours are Tuesday–Sunday 10 am–4 pm from October to March and 10 am–6 pm from April to September; closed on Mondays.
